Craftin' & Carvin' at the Legion
Arts & Crafts Fair &
Chainsaw Carving Competition
Here are some highlights of the 2015 Chainsaw
Carving Competition. If you missed our great event last year, catch us this year on May 7, 2016!
To give credit to the chainsaw artists, they worked for nearly seven straight hours, creating all manner of imaginative sculptures. Each was asked to carve examples from "sea, land, and air," in two-hour "heats." After only a thirty minute break, they were back at it, addressing another two-by-three-foot pine log, and trying to discover just what was inside. The product - three-foot-tall eagles, leaping fish, overall-clad black bears, and all the others, reflected their outstanding talent and dedication to their art.
Participating from Georgia were: Mal McEwen (Cleveland), John Robinson (Gainesville), Chris Lantz (Eatonton), and Troy Brazie (Fremont). Traveling the furthest was Isaac Schroth, from Melbourne, FL.
The winner of the competition was determined by the highest "hammer price" realized in the auction, and that award went to Chris Lantz, whose Leaping Bass commanded a $355 bid, while the Crimson Tide elephant and War Eagle topped out at $350.
We want to thank all the bidders for supporting our auction and for helping to support our programs!
